PHIL DIRT'S
TRACK BY TRACK REVIEW OF SONAR SAFARI

**** (4 STARS!)

The original concept from the days in DC when Dave's understanding of things surf was limited to surfing the subway. I have to say that his material from these days is exceptional. They were a unique band in a time when experimental pop was the order of the day. A great record. Wonderful vocal tracks and instros too.

Picks: Twenty 9, Blue Line

Sound Of The Surf ****

More upbeat and poppy than prior works, this has just the slightest hint of Insect arrangements to come. It's a vocal with words longing for the ocean's curl. The keys are gone, and the intensity is up, while the vocal style is more gloomy. A fine surf vocal.

Twenty 9 ****

Super warbled guitar tones, or are those keys? It makes no never-mind when the Insects Surfers are at the controls. This sports a simple melody that blends in with the backtrack. It has enough changes and things going on that the blended structure works really well. I found myself carried along with it to parts unknown, while not realizing I was getting sucked in. It's a bit psycho, a lot eighties, and just enough surfy to capture the soul of an old gremmie.

Barricade Beach ****

Infectious backtrack work, sixties keyboard riffs, catchy cool rhythms, occasional guitar glissandoes, and deluxe lyrics combine to create a surf vocal of must-have proportions. This fine track was also issued on a flexi-disc with Trowser Press or some such mag.

Blue Line ****

This is a pretty interesting track. The guitar work displays the Dave Arnson we all know of today, but is over a decade old. It shows just how early Dave was forming his unique style, and how easily it blends with keyboards and eighties structures. It's a very fine track, with some nice production, and a lot of soul.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

Open My Eyes ***

"Can't Explain" opening line transitions into an eighties pop song. It's a nice number, but I didn't find it to be of the caliber of VOA or Barricade Beach.
Eighties Pop Vocal Stereo
