Insect Surfers at Safari Sam's on September 18, 2008
Given the loosy-goosy antics of the Insects onstage and the 'spontaneity'
of their musical performance, it's easy to overlook the fact that this is a
tight, disciplined unit. This becomes quite evident when one is called upon
to sit in with them; learning their arrangements gave me a deeper
appreciation for the work and dedication that must have gone into creating
the ingenious and often complex song structures that are the launching pads
for their outrageous jams. True freedom comes from structure, not chaos; for
a band to be this loose, they gotta first be tight!
